"The department has developed a plan to systematically phase out the green ID book and ultimately consolidate the restoration, common citizenship, identity and dignity to South Africans."
Home Affairs said those who wished to apply for Smart ID cards now, could do so at any of the 180 offices that are already equipped with the Live Capture System.
South Africans can also apply for Smart ID Cards FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank and ABSA branches.
